In the days of the Iron Curtain

This article in the BBC website magazine is a nice story. It tells the tale of the correspondence between the family of a Soviet dissident and a British antiquarian bookseller and his wife.

The story is ever so touching, but also reminded me of just how much the world has changed since I was a lad. Now we are concerned by terroists blowing up planes, then we concerned about a full scale nuclear war.

It's comforting in a wierd kind of way. My husband has a theory that as the world is getting safer, we are becoming more risk-averse; because actually we like a bit of danger to spice up our lives.

I am pleased you explained the comments thing - I have tried on a couple of other people who have switched to beta and been thrown out :).

I posted about this too, but looking at the time you beat me to it :-) It is a wonderful story, I was in tears by the end.

It's funny Mr Blogs and I were discussing the Cold War a few days ago, and I said pretty much the same as you. I know terrorists are scary, but, compared to millions of Red Army soldiers and a nuclear apocalypse, well, they just don't match up.

I read this over at Kate's - it's a lovely story.

I'm also very impressed at your recent comments over at mine. I'm not sure why, but I don't think I'd have expected you to be so liberal. I'm glad I was guided to your site all those months ago, be it by a guardian or the Next Blog flag x

I don't know, Pete. I hope I didn't offend you.

I guess it's probably got a lot to do with the fact that your parents are together after so many years of marriage, and I'm not aware of you ever having gone through any major traumas in your life. I realise, of course, that this is merely supposition on my part and the worries you are having now with your Mum's health, and your previous redundancies I wouldn't wish on anybody, let alone anything else.

I fear I'm digging myself a deeper hole here, which may cost me a pint of beer next time we meet up.

Please don't be cross x

over that Beer of course or a nice glass of Sauvingon Blanc :D
