The simple pleasures of a London Square.

We are all aware of the many great parks and who cannot love Hyde Park, Regent's Park, or Green Park? Not to mention the rest. But one of the things I love about London is it squares.

You are walking along a busy street people and traffic everywhere and then you stroll down a side street and find a small oasis. There will be seats where you can read a book, eat a sandwich or simply sit and relax. Often you'll find the odd bird (other than the ubiquitous Feral Pigeon) today it was a Blackbird.

I often post pictures from two other squares Cavendish and Soho but today I'll look at Hanover Square. It is situated just south of Oxford Street.

Hanover Square was developed from 1713 as a fashionable residential address by Richard Lumley, 1st Earl of Scarbrough, the soldier and statesman best known for his role in the Glorious Revolution. A few of the 18th-century houses remain largely intact, most of the square has been reconstructed in a variety of periods and it is mostly offices.

Still the square remains as a small oasis of calm for the office worker or shopper to escape the hustle and bustle of the 21st century. It is planted with a selection of flowers  and made me smile on a lovely spring morning.

A palm tree?? Like  being back in Seville.

Some squares are private as they in effect the gardens of the properties around them. There is an open weekend in June which I may need to investigate.....

Before the concert Sunday I was in Cavendish Square and sat for 15 minutes to enjoy the sun and read and I was serenaded by a Robin. The simple pleasures of a London Square.
