The Sixteen @ Saffron Hall

Last night I went to the last concert of the year at Saffron Hall, the concert was The Sixteen.

For those who don't know The Sixteen are a UK based choir conducted by Harry Christophers. They specialise in early English polyphony, works of the Renaissance, Baroque and early Classical music, and a diversity of 20th-century music.

The programme was centred on the The Virgin Mother and Child and featured a mix of plainsong, renaissance polyphony and modern pieces. Older composers included Thomas Tallis, William Byrd and Robert Parsons whilst modern composers included John Tavener, James MacMillan and a 2013 piece by Alec Roth.

Hard to say what my favourite piece was since I enjoyed all of it but curiously a Tavener piece with just 2 lines really worked.

There were two encores with the final one being Ding Dong Merrily on High!

It was a really good evening.

I'm back to see The Sixteen at Saffron Hall in February. The programme will be somewhat different as the choir will be joined by their Orchestra and soloists for a programme of Handel.
